Participants
This course is intended for
EFL teachers (both native and
non-native speakers) interested
in developing their use of CALL,
with two years' relevant teaching
experience.
Course
All sessions have a large practical
component and are task based.
The following topics are included
in the course:
- CALL hardware
Discussion of the hardware and
software tools required for
basic computing, multimedia,
presentations, networking and
connection to the Internet.
- Evaluating software
Discussion of ways in which
the value of commercially available
CALL software can be assessed,
using agreed selection criteria.
Much of this session is spent
applying criteria to a range
of commonly available software.
- Developing writing skills
How writing skills can be developed
using the word processor as
well as materials for developing
reading and listening.
- Computer Mediated Communication
(CMC)
The language and pedagogic application
of CMC.
- Using the Internet
Finding and evaluating websites
for authentic materials, reference
sources and language learning
activities; using the Internet
to communicate with other students
and teachers, and making use
of Web technologies such as
wikis and blogs.
- Creating web pages and using
Virtual Learning Environments
Discussion of the design of
webpages and the use of Virtual
Learning Environments. This
includes practice in designing
web pages and building a simple
website without specialist programming
knowledge.
- Making presentations
This session looks at presentation
packages such as Microsoft Powerpoint
to make effective presentations
at workshops and conferences
and in your teaching. This involves
the course participants in designing
and making a short presentation
of their own.
