Participants must:

    subject to learners aged 11-18;
  • have an upper intermediate level of English;
  • bring samples of their own content subject materials.

Course

Aim
The course aims to develop participants' confidence and competence in using English to teach content, that is non-language subjects; to explore appropriate methodologies and activities for different content areas and contexts; to develop the ability to adapt materials; and to improve participants' own language proficiency.

Content
Course topics include ways of using spoken and written text to convey information; activities for encouraging student ouput in spoken and written form; techniques for dealing with vocabulary; and setting up project work. The topic of assessment is also considered. Workshops, where participants are encouraged to adapt and create material for their own contexts, are an integral part of the course. Participants are expected to present their self-designed work at the end of the course. There is also a session on classroom language in addition to explicit language improvement classes in the afternoons where the focus is on improving participants' own language proficiency.

Approach
The approach is task-based and interactive with an emphasis on collaborative group work. Participants are expected to take part in activities, reflect on both their own classroom practice and the activities they have experienced, and discuss and work on adaptations and projects appropriate for their own teaching context.
