Participants
Our classes
are suitable for all language
levels from pre-intermediate
to advanced. Please note that
we do not take complete beginners.
Classes are composed of professional
people, those already studying
English or other subjects, and
people from a wide range of
other backgrounds. Many different
countries are represented in
the General English programme
giving it an international dimension
which offers opportunities to
learn not only about British
culture but also about other
cultures.
Course
Morning classes
focus on the development of
the four language skills - listening,
speaking, reading, writing -
and on the understanding and
appropriate use of grammar,
vocabulary and pronunciation
in English (i.e. sounds, intonation
and stress). We help students
individually to identify key
areas for development, and guide
them to ways of achieving improvement
using effective resources in
and outside the classroom, including
the Institute's Self-Access
Centre.
Students choose
afternoon classes to extend
their vocabulary and increase
their fluency in short topical
modules of their choice such
as the media, film, drama or
British culture; or to work
more intensively on specific
language areas (such as writing,
speaking or grammar).
Students use
both published course books
and specialised materials including
authentic written and spoken
texts, DVD, video and audio
recordings and computer based
exercises. Students regularly
work in small groups and are
encouraged to find out things
for themselves and to learn
from others as well as the teacher.
Students following
the Intensive programme can
also register for Specialist
Classes in Exam Preparation,
Business
English, Academic
English, Legal
English, or Medical
English.
