Entry Requirements/ Participants

Foundation Academic English (FAE) is a full-time course (20 class hours per week) designed for students who intend to do a university degree course in Britain and need to develop their English language and study skills for the university context. The FAE programme is suitable for students with IELTS scores up to 6.0, or below 70 out of 146 on the ELTC Placement Cloze Test.

Students with a low English proficiency on arrival may need to take FAE for 18 months or more to achieve the IELTS score required for university entry. It takes considerable time and practice to make the necessary progress. Click here to see our advice on how long you need to study. FAE students must take IELTS regularly - at least once per term - and report the results to the FAE Course Director, Kenneth Anderson.

Students at higher levels may require a shorter period of study to achieve the level they need. If your English is already at a good Intermediate level (IELTS 6.5 or above) between September and May, you should attend the General English Intensive course, with a choice of afternoon class options or IELTS exam skills classes. From 23 May 2012, students who have achieved the appropriate IELTS scores (see below) by 16 April move to our English for Academic Purposes Pre-sessional Programme.
