Entry Requirements/ Participants

The table above shows the range of language levels accepted for each course. You will be tested on arrival. If your level is higher or lower than the range for that course, you may be moved to one of our General and Advanced courses.

These three courses are designed for undergraduates and postgraduates intending to begin studies at the University of Edinburgh at the end of the summer. Some students attending the courses will have conditional places at the University of Edinburgh and it is particularly important that they read the advice on English language test scores and minimum recommended preparation periods, so that they allow themselves time to make sufficient progress and achieve their College's English entry requirement.

For details, see http://www.ials.ed.ac.uk/EL/English-Academic/Pre-sessional.html

Course

These courses provide intensive training in the skills needed for academic study through English:

- Lecture comprehension and note-taking

- Effective reading

- Essay writing

- Participation in seminars

They also feature activities to extend students' basic command of English grammar and academic vocabulary.

The Pre-Summer Course and Course 1 provide practice in these key language skills separately.   In Course 2 we move to integrated skills practice, with students using the skills in combination, on the topic of English as an international language.  In these three courses, classes are formed by language level, measured on our EAP placement tests.

The courses can be taken singly or in combination. Students with conditional places at the University of Edinburgh must complete their minimum recommended preparation period before the end-of-course assessment.
