English Classes
Academic
English for International Students
(AEIS)
Undergraduates
wishing to take an English course
for credit
(for at least six hours per
week) should visit http://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/visiting-exchange/courses/course_list.php?session=1&area=253
and read about our AEIS
classes . Enrolment in the programme
depends on achieving an appropriate
level on IELTS, TOEFL or TEAM.
For details, see the course
descriptions accessible from
the link shown above.
English
for Visiting Students (EVS)
If
you want to study English for
a couple of hours a week, we
offer English for Visiting Students
(EVS) , which caters for students
on ERASMUS and other exchange
programmes, and for postgraduate
researchers not taking a degree
at Edinburgh. Classes are grouped
by scores on our entry test.
EVS is not suitable for students
with an already advanced level
of English; see ‘Alternatives',
below.
There
are two levels of EVS . The
higher class
- students with scores of roughly
60-80% on our test – use the
reading and discussion of topical
texts, such as newspaper reports
and articles, to develop fluency
and to extend their repertoire
of English lexis and syntax.
The lower class
(for those with scores below
60%) provides a basic review
of English grammar and vocabulary
for academic writing, and includes
practice in listening and note-taking.
Enrolment
You
will receive instructions on
how to enrol when you receive
your test score. If you score
higher than 80%, you may choose
one of the ‘Alternatives' shown
below.
We
open an EVS class as
soon as we have a minimum of
eight enrolments, which is usually
by semester week 3. However,
the starting date depends on
the number of enrolments.
There will be 8-16 people per
class. The classes are held
once a week, 2-4 pm on Wednesdays,
and end in week 11 of the semester.
Fees
The
discounted fees for EVS
are £5.20
per hour for the 2011-2012 academic
year. This is less than half
our normal tuition rate. Students
pay for the semester, in advance.
If you join a class that has
already started, you pay for
the remaining weeks of the semester.
We expect you to attend all
the sessions once you have started
the course; there are no refunds
for any absences.
Alternatives
- If your test score
is above the course level,
you may benefit from using
our book PROFILE: Principles,
Resources and Options for
the Independent Learner of
English. It is
written specifically for students
in Edinburgh who are not eligible
for classes or who prefer
to make further progress independently.
PROFILE costs £5.00
and is available from ELTC
Reception, 21 Hill Place,
Edinburgh.
- If you are not able
to attend classes,
you could advertise at ELTC
for a language exchange ,
which costs nothing. (In a
language exchange, you find
a British person who is studying
your language, and the two
of you meet regularly for
conversation practice, speaking
half the time in your language
and the other half in English). Email
eltcinfo@ed.ac.uk
for details.
- If you would like to improve
your English through
independent study,
we recommend you visit Andy
Gillett's excellent academic
English learning website at
